Message from the Directors

December 2009

The Fall of 2009 proved to be another busy quarter at IN-CAM and for CAM researchers.

The Dr. Roger Rogers Prize or Excellence in Complementary and Alternative Medicine , launched in 2007, is the largest CAM-related monetary prize in the world. The second Dr. Roger Rogers Prize Gala Dinner took place on September 25, 2009 in Vancouver. This was preceded by the Dr. Rogers Colloquium: a dialogue between the audience and four well-known clinicians and researchers in the field (Stephen Aung, Jim Gordon, Joseph Pizzorno and Marja Verhoef) on two key issues: What is appropriate evidence? What does integration look like? The audience raised many more questions than the panel could answer, clearly demonstration the importance and relevance of these issues. The dialogue was expertly guided by professional moderator, Maria LeRose.

At the gala the 2009 winners were announced: Drs Hal Gunn and Badri Rickhi. These two physicians exemplify the vision, leadership and integrity that characterized Dr. Rogers’ lifetime of work. Dr Gunn took the fledgling Centre for Integrated Healing, created by Dr. Rogers and evolved it into today’s InspireHealth, which is a unique model of integrated cancer care focused not solely on the cancer, but on treating the whole person. Dr Rickhi played a key role in establishing the Integrative Health Institute at Mount Royal College in Calgary. He also has been very successful in alleviating depression with his integrative approach and most recently has focused on teen depression.

One of IN-CAM’s goals is to facilitate and support CAM research. To ensure continuity of funding opportunities for Canadian CAM researchers, we have partnered with the Holistic Health Research Foundation and developed a fund specific for CAM research in Canada: the Canadian CAM Research Fund (CCRF). The fund will be administered by the Holistic Health Research Foundation and supported by IN-CAM. The first annual CCRF competition was officially announced on September 19, 2009. See (http://www.incamresearch.ca/index.php?id=22,455,0,0,1,0) for further information. Proposal applications are due December 15, 2009.

The date for the 2010 IN-CAM Research Symposium has been set - , it will take place November 19-21, 2010 in Vancouver, British Columbia This will be IN-CAM’s 6th Symposium and we hope to make it the biggest and best one yet! We plan to make an announcement for abstract submission in spring 2010. As with previous Symposia, the format will begin with an open public forum on Friday evening. Updates about the Symposium will be posted on our website and will also be distributed via our newsflash.

The initiation of the yearly member re-registration process was very successful: Currently we have over1900 members and our membership continues to grow! Thank you for your co-operation and taking the time to update your profile information and re-new your IN-CAM membership. To ensure that the Member Database remains updated, all members will continue to be contacted via e-mail on a yearly basis with a request to update their information and re-activate their member status.

As 2009 comes to an end, we would like to wish you and your families a happy and restful holiday season.

Marja and Heather
